Q

What sort of license is necessary?

A

In order to rent a vehicle, a license valid for driving in Japan is required. For details on licenses, see here.

Q

I hold an international driving permit. Can I rent a vehicle?

A

Vehicles can be rented on presentation of one of the following international driving permits or licenses valid for driving in Japan, and your passport. International driving permits must be current.

(1) International driving permits: international driving permits issued in accordance with the Geneva Convention by a signatory country. (International driving permits based on the Vienna Convention, EU and other agreements are not valid for driving in Japan.)

(2) Driver's license from home country and an official Japanese translation: driving licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Taiwan, Slovenia or Monaco, together with a Japanese translation performed by a government-approved agent. (International driving permits issued by the above countries and regions cannot be used to drive in Japan.)

If I forget to bring my license that day, can I still rent a vehicle??

A

Unfortunately, unless you present your license at the time of departure you will not be able to rent a vehicle.Driving without a license is a violation of traffic laws.Please do not forget your license.

Q

Are there situations where I won't be able to rent a vehicle even if I possess a valid license?

A

Situations under which customers will not be able to rent a vehicle include when the customer appears to be under the influence of alcohol, when the driver in attendance at the time of pickup differs from the driver specified at the time of reservation, and when the customer failed to pay fees or return the vehicle as specified during a previous rental. How can I make a reservation?

A

How can I change or cancel a reservation?

A

Reservations can be changed or cancelled online via the Nippon Rent-A-Car website, or by calling the English Service Desk. For details, see here.

Q

Will a cancellation fee apply when cancelling a reservation?

A

When cancelling a reservation within 6 days of the departure date, a specified cancellation fee will apply. If no contact is made within one hour after the reserved time, the reservation will automatically be cancelled. However, reservations that are cancelled on the same day as they are made will not incur a cancellation fee.

Can you arrange for a driver?

A

Unfortunately, customers must arrange a driver on their own. Please understand that rental car companies are prohibited by law from acting as drivers themselves, introducing drivers, or acting as intermediaries. Thank you for your understanding.

Do rates differ depending on the rental period?

A

There are peak seasons, dependent on region, during which rates will vary. For details, see this page.

Vehicle categories/options

Q

Until what age are child seats required? Does installing a child seat affect the maximum passenger capacity?

A

Under the Road Traffic Law, drivers are required to place children riding in the vehicle under the age of six in child seats.For details on Nippon Rent-A-Car's own standards, see here.

Can I reserve options such as snow tires, snow chains and ski racks?

A

Please reserve these options when reserving the vehicle. Only in snowy regions are snow tires considered standard equipment in winter and do not require an additional charge. For other regions, snow tires are considered an option and will incur an additional charge.Snow chains and ski rack are optional in all regions, and will incur an additional charge. Can I reserve a car navigation system?

A

Please reserve navigation systems when reserving the vehicle.Navigation systems come as standard equipment (free of charge) on passenger vehicles and wagons. For details, see here.

Can I reserve a non-smoking vehicle?

A

All passenger cars and minivans are no smoking.
All cargo vans, trucks and dry vans are smoking.

Q

Can I return my vehicle to a different rental locations?

A

Yes, you can. Nippon Rent-A-Car's one-way rental service allows customers to return vehicles to a rental location that is different to the one from which they departed. Be aware, however, that one-way rental may be unavailable at certain rental locations, depending on the location of the rental location to which you wish to return the vehicle, etc. Furthermore, when utilizing one-way rental, a reservation is required. Insurance and coverage

Do I need to purchase insurance in addition to the base vehicle rental fee?

A

As the base rental fee paid by customers includes basic insurance and coverage, additional insurance is not required in order to rent a vehicle. However, a separate charge is required for enrollment in the collision damage waiver (CDW) system.

What is the difference between the peace of mind course and the standard course?

A

Accident compensation differs for the peace of mind course and standard course.

Standard course

・Bodily injury coverage: unlimited

・Property damage coverage: 30 million yen

・Vehicle coverage: market value of vehicle

・Personal injury coverage: 30 million yen

Peace of mind course

・Bodily injury coverage: unlimited

・Property damage coverage: unlimited

・Vehicle coverage: market value of vehicle

・Personal injury coverage: 50 million yen

Q

What is the collision damage waiver (CDW) system?

A

CDW is an optional system to compensate for property and vehicle damage deductibles, in the event of an accident, for which the customer is usually liable. For details, see here.

Q

What is the non-operation charge (NOC)?

A

Should accident, theft, breakdown, staining or other incident not the responsibility of Nippon Rent-A-Car occur, and vehicle repairs or cleaning is necessary, the following amounts will be charged, regardless of the severity of damage or length of time required for repair, to compensate Nippon Rent-A-Car partially for the interruption in business.For details, see here.

Payment

Q

When should payment be made?

A

Payment for basic rental fees, one-way rental fees, collision damage waiver (CDW) enrollment fees, option fees and consumption tax (including local consumption tax) must be made at the rental location at the time of departure. Additionally, payment for extended rental periods and fuel charges must be made at the rental location upon return.

Can payment be made with any credit card?

A

Payment can be made with any credit card accepted by Nippon Rent-A-Car (single payment only).

How are rates calculated?

A

Rates for Nippon Rent-A-Car are determined based on vehicle class and rental period. For details, see here.

Q

What is the late-night fee?

A

When departing from and/or returning a vehicle to a 24-hour rental location from 23:00-04:59, a late-night fee (1,080 yen, tax included) will be charged. If both departure and return occur during this period, only the departure fee will be charged.

Do rates differ depending on distance travelled?

A

Rates do not differ based on distance travelled.

What is required on the day of rental?

A

On the day of rental, you will need

(1) Your or the person driving driver's license

(2) Your passport

(3) A credit card

What should I do if there is more than one driver and they cannot all be present at the rental location?

A

As all drivers must be specified at the time of departure, please list all drivers (all drivers must have a valid driving license) on the rental certificate.

Do I need to fuel the vehicle?

A

As vehicles are rented out with a full tank of gas, customers are required to re-fill their tanks with the fuel specified by the automaker before returning their vehicle. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas, you will be charged for gas based on either a separately determined conversion rate for distance travelled, or on the remainder shown on the vehicle's fuel gauge. Be aware that when charged in this manner, the total will exceed what would be required to refill the tank directly. For details on fueling, see here.

What should I do if I get into an accident?

A

In the event of an accident, please promptly carry out the following three procedures. Please carry out all three procedures, as they include important steps for receiving insurance coverage.

(1) Provide assistance to any injured parties

First, provide assistance to any injured parties. After providing assistance, promptly move the rental car to a location where it will not interfere with other traffic.

(2) Notify police and file a report

Both the perpetrator and the victim are required to notify the police. This step is necessary, as an accident report will be required later.

(3) Contact the Nippon Rent-A-Car Accident Center

Do I need to carry out these procedures even for small scrapes, rather than accidents?

A

Yes, you do. Nippon Rent-A-Car treats all incidents as accidents, regardless of the degree of damage and denting, and whether or not any third parties were involved. Please carry out the above procedures for all incidents, including for those of which you are unsure. (If necessary procedures are not carried out, insurance and coverage will not apply and the customer will bear responsibility for payments.)
Additionally, be aware that in order to partially compensate Nippon Rent-A-Car for the interruption in business while the vehicle is being repaired, the following amounts will be charged, regardless of the severity of damage or length of time required for repair. Non-operation charge (NOC)

(2) Other situations: 50,000 yen

Q

My plans have suddenly changed and I wish to change either my return time or return location.

A

In order to change your return time or location while in the middle of a rental, you must contact the departing rental location. The location will inform you whether a change is possible, depending upon other reservations, and other details. Be aware that overdue rates may apply when changing your return time, and one-way rental fees may apply when changing your return location, whether returning to a location in the same prefecture or a different prefecture.
